2 Museums in 1 Building

The Deke Slayton Museum is located on the second floor of a repurposed Masonic Temple in Sparta Wisconsin. Residing on the first floor is the Monroe County Local History Room. The Masonic Temple was originally built in 1923. The Masons, after having used the building for 70 years, decided to construct a new facility in the early 1990s. The old Masonic Temple became Monroe County property which became the museum complex as it is today. The Museum Complex is part of Sparta’s unique four corners, on each corner of the intersection of Court St and Main St resides a historic building. These four historic buildings include the Museum Complex, Sparta’s Courthouse, Sparta’s Post Office, and the Sparta Free Library.
